The seated image, stepped lotus throne and pierced back arch form a single architectural composition, with the tall prabhavali giving the piece much of its visual presence.

Catalogue details

Origin: India

Date: 20th century

Material: copper alloy

Dimensions: H 22 × W 11.5 cm

Weight: 1.6 kg

Gesture: Vitarka mudra at the right hand; left hand resting in Dhyana

Iconography and ornament

The raised right hand presents the teaching gesture while the left is held quietly across the lap. Around the Buddha, the openwork arch is populated by protective imagery: a kirtimukha crowns the top, with makara- and yali-like creatures arranged through the sides. Lotus bands, animal panels, hanging motifs and a triangular wheel emblem continue the decorative vocabulary across the pedestal.

Casting and aged surface

The figure is hollow cast with an open underside, where traces from the casting core remain visible. The copper-alloy surface has developed a warm golden tone, with darker material settled into recessed ornament and natural wear across exposed details. These variations give the piece a pleasing old, handled appearance.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1012/6170/5547/files/oud-indiaas-koperen-boeddhabeeld-torana-20e-eeuw.jpg?v=1788866717
