Vintage Balinese Garuda Sculpture – Indonesian Mythological Wood Carving

A lively vintage wood carving from Bali depicting the legendary Garuda carrying Vishnu. The sculpture has an almost architectural quality, with the figures rising through a dense arrangement of feathers, curves and projecting carved elements.

It is the silhouette that gives this piece much of its character. Viewed straight on it appears compact and symmetrical, while from either side the carving becomes considerably more sculptural. The numerous projecting sections create changing shadows and make the work particularly effective as a freestanding decorative object.

Indonesian carving from Bali

During the 20th century, Balinese workshops developed an extraordinarily diverse tradition of figurative woodcarving. Hindu mythology remained an important source of inspiration, while individual carvers interpreted traditional subjects with considerable freedom and decorative imagination.

This sculpture belongs to that broader tradition. Garuda can be recognised by his powerful bird-like appearance, while the accompanying deity represents Vishnu, whose association with Garuda has been depicted in Indonesian art for centuries.

Hand-carved character

The sculpture was worked from wood and finished extensively by hand. Tool-cut details remain visible throughout the composition, particularly around the feathers and smaller ornamental passages. Slight asymmetries contribute to the individuality of the piece.

The surface has matured to varying shades of brown, with darker coloration remaining in protected recesses. General wear and minor age-related irregularities are present.
