Rising 91 cm and spanning 63 cm, this early 20th-century Indochinese gong hangs in a stand carved from solid hardwood with remarkable depth. The whole oval frame takes the form of gnarled plum branches in full bloom, their five-petal prunus flowers cut in high relief and openwork. Stands of this kind belong to the craft tradition of Vietnam and Southern China, where the flowering prunus speaks of resilience and fresh beginnings.
Two splayed, root-like legs carry the frame. Pierced arches run beneath the top, crowned by a round, smooth cartouche set between two turned wooden knobs. The gong is hammered brass with a raised, hammered centre boss, suspended on wire from two brass eyelets, and it comes with its two wooden beaters. The dense hardwood has a warm, dark brown wax patina.
Light scratches on the cartouche, small knocks to blossoms and leg ends and the mellow patina of the gong reflect a century of use and give the piece its character. At 11.8 kg and 91 cm, it makes a striking focal point for a hallway, living room or yoga space. We pack it with great care for shipping, and collection or delivery can be arranged on request.
