Antique Hand-carved Hindu Temple Frieze with Ganesha – India – Approx. 1900
Retail price: € 345.–
Offered is a high-quality and characterful architectural sculpture from early Indian folk art: a fully hand-carved hardwood temple frieze. This authentic panel originally formed part of the monumental structure of a Hindu temple or a ceremonial processional chariot (ratha).
The refined relief is constructed with extreme detail in multiple registers. In the lower register is the centrally positioned elephant god **Ganesha** (the remover of obstacles), flanked by ritual worshippers. The upper register depicts various deities and celestial dancers (apsaras) in dynamic, classical poses. The base is powerfully supported by a frieze of meditating figures.
The object is in a sublime, weathered condition. Over the decades, the hardwood has developed a deep, weathered patina. The mild wear on the texture and the natural movement of the wood bear witness to the historical and ceremonial context. The back shows the original, recessed architectural construction with the authentic manual tool marks of the master carver.
An exclusive, museum-worthy object with a strong spiritual presence. Perfectly suitable as a standalone art object in a high-end, serene, or Wabi-Sabi interior.
