Catalogue note
A small Thai devotional bronze of Shakyamuni seated in the earth-touching gesture. Its tall flame finial, elongated ears, restrained robe and balanced modelling belong to the Sukhothai-derived vocabulary that continued into the Ayutthaya period.
The open underside preserves a substantial amount of the original clay-and-sand casting core from the lost-wax process. Irregular internal bronze surfaces, long-established oxidation around the core and small core-support openings provide useful evidence of traditional manufacture.
The exterior carries a mature dark brown, green and blue-green copper patina. Microscopic examination reveals minute gold-coloured remnants in protected recesses around the face, hair, robe and body. These traces are essentially invisible to the naked eye and are catalogued as remnants of an earlier gilded surface rather than as a claim of fire gilding.
Condition
Historic wear, corrosion and patination consistent with age and devotional handling. Original casting-core material remains visible from below. The detailed macro and microscope photographs form part of the condition documentation.
