Dimensions:
Height: 166 cm
Width: 63 cm
Weight: 27 kg
Standing an impressive 166 cm tall, this monumental Buddha sculpture was hand-carved from solid teak wood in Myanmar (formerly Burma). Its refined proportions, tranquil facial expression and richly decorated robe reflect the long tradition of Burmese temple carving, where religious sculpture was created not merely as decoration but as an expression of devotion and craftsmanship.
Across the surface, traces of the original gilding remain visible beneath layers of traditional black and red lacquer. Together they have developed a beautiful natural patina that only decades of age and careful preservation can produce.
Large temple sculptures of this quality required highly skilled artisans. Every decorative border of the robe was carved entirely by hand before multiple coats of natural lacquer were applied. Finally, the sculpture received its original gilded finish, remnants of which can still be admired throughout the figure today.
The elegant standing posture, finely modelled hands and serene expression demonstrate the craftsmanship associated with the great carving workshops of central Myanmar.
Hidden areas reveal successive historic finishing layers, including black lacquer, red preparation layers and surviving traces of gold leaf. The natural wear is concentrated on raised surfaces, while protected recesses still preserve much of the original finish, creating a rich visual contrast that enhances the sculpture's authenticity.
Large teak sculptures naturally develop shrinkage cracks over many decades as the timber slowly adapts to changing climates. These age-related characteristics are present throughout the sculpture and contribute to its historic character.
Based on its construction, carving style, lacquer technique and surviving gilding, this sculpture is most likely attributable to the late nineteenth or early twentieth century. It closely reflects the artistic traditions of the Mandalay region during the final period of the Konbaung Kingdom, when monumental wooden Buddha images were produced for temples and monasteries throughout Burma.
Today, monumental Burmese wooden Buddhas of this scale and quality are increasingly sought after by collectors of Asian art for both private collections and interior design projects.
Very good antique condition with age-appropriate wear. Natural shrinkage cracks, historical lacquer surfaces, remaining original gilding and minor signs of age all contribute to the authenticity and character of this exceptional temple sculpture.
