Russian Lacquer Icon Box with Virgin Mary and Christ Child – Hand-Painted

Russian lacquer icon box with the Virgin and Child

A small hand-painted Russian lacquer box featuring the Virgin Mary and Christ Child in the intimate Eleusa iconographic tradition, often associated with the celebrated Vladimir Mother of God image. The close placement of the two faces gives the composition its characteristic sense of tenderness and devotion.

The papier-mâché body is finished in glossy black lacquer, contrasted by a vivid red lacquer interior. The lid is painted in warm ochre, red and blue tones over a gold-coloured ground, while a restrained scrolling gold motif runs around the sides.
