This original, traditional Japanese 'Dento' Kokeshi doll (遠刈田系) embodies the pure, minimalist aesthetic of the historic Togatta lineage from the Tohoku region. Standing 25.5 cm tall with a diameter of 6.6 cm, this vintage sculpture (circa 1960–1980) is a beautifully stylized collector's item. The doll is expertly crafted on a lathe from a single solid piece of high-quality Mizuki wood (dogwood), which has developed a silky-smooth, honey-golden aged patina over the decades.

This hand-painted artwork bears the rare signature of master artisan Katsu and forms a perfect design icon within a modern Japandi or minimalist interior.

Style Characteristics & Paint Stratigraphy

This object exhibits the unmistakable, ancient characteristics of the classical Togatta-遠刈田系 tradition. The spherical head features the characteristic, hand-painted black hair with a radial parting on the crown, flanked by iron-red floral 'Kanbashi' head ornaments. The slender, cylindrical body is manually adorned with stylized red chrysanthemum petals and parallel rings in traditional black carbon ink and deep red pigments. The serene, meditative face is applied with utmost precision and minimal brushstrokes.

Forensic Analysis & Basic Characteristics

  • Signed Base: The flat underside shows clean, concentric lathe rings. Centrally on the bottom is the crisp, unfaded ink signature "克" (Katsu), verifying authentic execution by the master craftsman.
  • Mizuki Hardwood: The use of monolithic Mizuki wood (Dogwood) ensures a compact weight of 300 grams and guarantees a stable, crack-free structure without the need for modern fillers.
  • Origin & Age Markers: The outer edge of the wooden base shows a mild, purple-blue micro-pigment transfer. This is a subtle forensic trace resulting from long-term vintage storage on traditionally colored Japanese paper or textile, further supporting the object's historical integrity.
