A Monumental Kwan Yin Created for the Interior

At 159 cm tall and weighing 43.6 kg, this extraordinary wooden Kwan Yin was made to command a space. Rather than following the appearance of a traditional Chinese devotional statue, the artist reduced Guanyin to her most powerful element: a large, peaceful face emerging from an enormous piece of timber.

The result sits somewhere between sculpture, spiritual art and architectural interior design. From a distance, the serene expression dominates. Up close, the rough carving, natural timber and hundreds of visible tool marks completely change the character of the work.

It is particularly suited to a large contemporary home, yoga studio, meditation centre, wellness resort, spa, hotel lobby or other interior where scale and atmosphere matter.

Kwan Yin – Compassion and Inner Calm

Kwan Yin, or Guanyin, is one of the most recognised figures in East Asian Buddhism and is traditionally associated with compassion, mercy and protection.

Here the subject has been interpreted in an unusually restrained way. There is no elaborate jewellery, lotus throne or richly decorated robe. Instead, the sculptor concentrated almost entirely on the face.

The closed eyes and elongated features create an expression of deep stillness. This simplicity makes the sculpture particularly effective in spaces dedicated to yoga, meditation, mindfulness and wellness, without making the surrounding interior feel like a traditional temple setting.

Brutalist Carving Meets Organic Modern Design

The calm face contrasts dramatically with the surrounding timber. Large sections have been aggressively worked with chisels and carving tools, leaving deep rhythmic marks across the surface.

Natural knots, irregular edges, fissures and changes in the structure of the timber were incorporated into the composition rather than concealed.

This approach gives the sculpture a strong Brutalist and Organic Modern character. The material itself becomes as important as the representation of Guanyin.

The reverse is equally interesting. Instead of leaving the back completely unfinished, the sculptor created a broad field of repeated hand-tool marks, giving the enormous wooden surface an almost abstract quality.

43.6 kg of Solid Carved Wood

The sheer physical presence of this sculpture is difficult to appreciate from photographs alone. At almost 1.60 metres high and weighing 43.6 kg, it is a substantial piece of carved timber.

The depth of the facial carving, combined with the relatively flat overall format, gives it the character of a monumental sculptural panel or freestanding wall sculpture rather than a conventional three-dimensional statue.

Natural drying and shrinkage cracks remain visible in the wood. These have not been disguised and form part of the organic appearance of the work.

Original Mobile Base on Locking Wheels

One of the most distinctive features is the heavy wooden base and its industrial metal castors. These wheels belong to the presentation of the sculpture and include locking mechanisms so the object can be secured once positioned.

This is particularly practical given its considerable weight. Despite weighing almost 44 kg, the sculpture can be repositioned within an interior without repeatedly lifting the entire object.

Two integrated carrying grips on the reverse provide additional assistance when handling or positioning the sculpture.

The combination of monumental carving and deliberately mobile presentation suggests that the work was conceived not simply as decoration, but as a substantial interior object intended to interact with its architectural surroundings.

Made for Exceptional Spaces

This is the type of sculpture that can define an entire room rather than simply decorate one.

Its scale makes it particularly suitable for:

  • Yoga and Pilates studios
  • Meditation and mindfulness spaces
  • Luxury spas and wellness centres
  • Retreat centres
  • Hotel lobbies and reception areas
  • Restaurants and hospitality interiors
  • Large contemporary homes and lofts
  • Interior design projects
  • Galleries and showrooms

In a minimalist environment, the natural timber provides warmth and texture. In a wellness or meditation setting, the image of Guanyin introduces a quiet spiritual presence without overwhelming the architecture.

Vintage Sculpture – c. 1970–1990

The highly simplified treatment of Guanyin, expressive carving, emphasis on raw timber and functional mobile presentation point toward a work created during the later 20th century rather than a traditional antique temple sculpture.

We therefore conservatively date the piece to approximately 1970–1990.

No specific artist or workshop has currently been identified, and we intentionally do not attribute the sculpture to a particular Asian country or carving tradition without supporting provenance.

Condition

Presented in vintage condition with natural drying and shrinkage cracks, variations in the timber and normal signs of age and use. These characteristics are visible in our photographs and form part of the deliberately organic appearance of this monumental work.
