Antique Thai Bronze Buddha Head – Circa 1900

This authentic bronze Buddha head originates from Thailand and is dated, based on stylistic and technical characteristics, to approximately 1880–1920. It is a finely cast example of traditional Thai bronze sculpture, displaying a serene expression, naturally aged patina and genuine signs of age. Although the original body has been lost over time, the head retains a remarkable spiritual presence and remains an outstanding collector's piece of Southeast Asian Buddhist art.

Dimensions

  • Height: 18 cm
  • Width: 12 cm
  • Depth: 16.5 cm
  • Weight: 1.5 kg

Description

The face represents the classical Thai interpretation of the Historical Buddha, featuring gently lowered eyelids, a refined nose and a peaceful meditative expression. The individually modelled spiral curls are characteristic of traditional Thai bronze sculptures produced during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Over more than a century, the surface has developed a rich natural patina with authentic wear and oxidation. During our technical examination, the casting quality, surface structure and UV response were documented. Under ultraviolet light, the interior displayed an even green fluorescence that could not be removed with acetone, indicating a historic surface development rather than a modern coating.

The casting quality is excellent. The individually finished hair curls and the irregular interior casting surface are consistent with the traditional lost-wax casting process and support a dating to around 1900.

The Meaning of the Buddha Head

The Buddha head symbolises wisdom, inner peace and enlightenment. The closed eyes represent meditation and spiritual awareness, while the gentle smile reflects compassion, balance and serenity. In Buddhist art, the Buddha head is far more than a portrait—it represents the teachings of the Buddha and the path towards inner awakening.

Condition

Good antique condition with authentic age-related wear, natural oxidation and a well-developed patina. This is an original bronze Buddha head; the original body was lost at some point in its history.
