Original Wooden Closure Plates in Antique Nepalese Bronze Sculptures
A 1stBuddha technical study of construction, consecration and material ageing
The underside of a hollow Buddhist sculpture may preserve evidence of casting, ritual filling, closure, repair and the long physical history of its materials. In some antique Nepalese bronzes, this history includes a fitted wooden closure plate rather than the copper plates more often illustrated in catalogues.
This study examines the old wooden plate in 1stBuddha product 265, a large Nepalese four-armed Avalokiteshvara in fire-gilt bronze. The research imagery records the fitted plate, a weathered central fastening zone, exposed wood fibres and blue-green deposits at the wood–bronze junction.

Historical context and the consecration cavity
Removing the casting core left an internal cavity that could receive mantras, texts and other consecrated materials. Closing the opening was therefore both a practical act and part of the sculpture’s ritual biography.
Published research on Nepalese Tamang bronzes explicitly states that filled statues were sealed with a wooden plaquette. Christie’s also records Nepalese sculptures with copper base plates, while a large seventeenth–eighteenth-century Buddha probably had an original pedestal of wood or clay before being resealed later with copper.
Wood therefore belongs within the documented range of Nepalese practice, but it was not universal and cannot by itself establish a workshop or century.
Direct observations
A wooden element occupies the opening in the bronze underside.
The plate closely follows the surrounding form.
A strongly weathered zone is present near the centre.
No intact central pin or nail survives.
The wood displays shrinkage, open fibres and local loss.
Blue, turquoise and green deposits concentrate at the wood–bronze interface.
Some deposits appear granular or crystalline under magnification.
These are observations, not chemical identifications or an absolute date.
The old central fastening point
The altered central area is consistent with the former position of a mechanical fixing. Because the fastener is absent, its material, form and date cannot be established. “Old central fastening point” is therefore more accurate than identifying a specific nail or ritual pin.
Microscopic wood fibres and weathering
Wood expands and contracts as humidity changes. Over time, pressure, handling and deterioration may expose fibres and erode edges. The plate’s coherent pattern of fibre exposure, wear and loss argues against a recently fitted piece, but visual weathering cannot provide an exact date.
Long-term wood–bronze interaction
The narrow interface can retain moisture, dust, soluble salts, organic compounds and copper ions. Wood is hygroscopic, and some woods may emit organic acids. These conditions can influence copper-alloy corrosion.
Blue-green corrosion and crystal formation
The colour and distribution of the deposits are consistent with copper-derived corrosion products forming or accumulating in the confined junction. Their crystalline-looking morphology is significant, but colour alone cannot identify a compound. Chlorides, carbonates and other copper compounds may look similar; analytical confirmation would require methods such as Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction or SEM–EDS.
Nor should every green deposit be termed “bronze disease.” That term refers to an active chloride-driven cycle, often recognised by recurring pale-green powdery eruptions. The responsible description here is blue-green copper-corrosion deposits with local crystalline morphology.
Dating significance
A wooden plate is not a self-sufficient dating tool. Sculptures could be opened, repaired, reconsecrated and resealed. In product 265, the fit, extensive weathering, missing central fixing and concentrated copper deposits together suggest a long-standing material relationship. The closure is supporting technical evidence to be considered with casting, alloy, gilding, iconography, style, condition and provenance.
Conclusion and conservation
The 1stBuddha study documents a fitted and substantially weathered wooden closure in direct interaction with a Nepalese copper alloy. External sources confirm historical wooden plaquettes alongside metal closures and wood or clay base constructions. The plate and deposits should not be cleaned, removed or opened without conservation justification, as intervention may destroy ritual contents or technical evidence.
