19th-Century Nepalese Ganesha – Heavy Copper-Alloy Devotional Bronze – Lot 112

A compact Nepalese devotional casting

This four-armed Ganesha is unusually substantial for its scale: approximately 3 kg at 19.5 cm high. The deity is seated on an elaborate throne, with the jewellery, costume and base carrying extensive hand-finished engraving. The dense mass gives the small sculpture considerably more presence than its dimensions suggest.

Why we describe the metal conservatively

The exposed surface reads yellow-gold, while protected cavities and the open underside retain green-blue, pale and reddish-brown corrosion products. Those observations confirm an aged copper-based alloy but do not, on photographs alone, justify forcing the material into a precise bronze-versus-brass label. We therefore catalogue it simply as an old cast copper alloy.
