Rare Antique Pichwai Temple Cloth – Sharad Purnima – India, ca. 1880
This monumental Pichwai painting (155 x 127 cm) is a museum-quality example of devotional art from Nathdwara, Rajasthan. The painting depicts the Sharad Purnima (the full moon of autumn), with Krishna in a regal form surrounded by Gopis on the banks of the Yamuna River. The composition is framed by the characteristic Kamal Talai (lotus pool), a symbol of spiritual purity.
Technique and Authenticity: This work is distinguished by the use of traditional mineral pigments and refined details in Varak (gold leaf).
