Antique Wooden Statue of Ebisu - Japanese God of Prosperity
This impressive, hand-carved statue depicts Ebisu, one of the seven gods of fortune in Japanese mythology. As the patron saint of fishermen and merchants, he symbolizes fair trade, abundance, and business success. The iconic image with the sea bream (tai) in his hand underscores his role as a bringer of prosperity and wealth.
The statue bears witness to craftsmanship in the expressive facial features and the detailed rendering of the robe. The sculpture has undergone natural aging over the years, resulting in characteristic shrinkage and age cracks in the wood. These traces of time emphasize the authentic and weathered character of this ritual object.
With its substantial dimensions and weight, this Ebisu statue is a powerful collector's item that serves as both a spiritual anchor and a striking decorative addition to an Asian art collection or interior.
