Standing 45.5 cm tall, this powerful Balinese mask was hand-carved from a single piece of wood in the second half of the 20th century. Its face follows the classic demonic type of Balinese mask art: large bulging eyes, a broad nose and an open mouth with a row of teeth and curling fangs. Above it rises a tall, richly carved crown of scrolling foliage and flame-like points.
The carving is deep and lively, and the wood has a warm, glossy brown finish. The back is hollowed out and carries a handwritten inscription in blue-green marker reading “Abianbase” – a village in the Gianyar regency of Bali known for its skilled woodcarvers, pointing to where the mask was carved. A cord at the top makes it ready to hang straight away.
