A cast brass water kettle made by the Minangkabau of West Sumatra and traced to Padang. A band of pucuk rebung motifs, the stylised bamboo shoots typical of Minangkabau design, runs around the body, and the openwork spout and hinged handle give it a lively silhouette. At 32 cm tall and 3 kg, it has a reassuring weight in the hand.

Vessels like this held water for washing the hands or for ceremonial use. It dates from the late 19th or early 20th century, during the colonial era of the Dutch East Indies. A high foot and its matching stand on shell-shaped feet lift the kettle up and give it a calm, formal presence on a sideboard or shelf.

The lid is topped by a knob with a small chain. A small section of the lid rim is missing, a mark of use that fits the kettle's age and adds to its character.
