A compact Chinese export koro made for a decorative market that favoured the dense colour and gold associated with Satsuma wares. Its rounded porcelain body stands on three gilt feet and is paired with a domed cover pierced with shaped apertures, allowing the vessel to function as a small incense burner.

Decoration

The surface is divided into figural and floral zones rather than treated as one continuous scene. Women in elaborate robes appear within garden and landscape settings, while deep blue reserves carry large blossoms and scattered dot work. Raised gilt lines frame the enamels and emphasize the vessel’s highly ornamental character. Fine crackling is visible across the pale glaze.

Mark and dating

The base bears a printed PF Handpainted decorator/export mark. It is not a traditional Japanese Satsuma workshop signature. Together with the construction and decoration, the mark places the piece comfortably in Chinese late-20th-century export production, around 1980–1990.
