Chinese Wooden Buddha – Qing Period – With Ancient Polychromy and Gilding
Cool antique Buddha from China, a unique wooden statue with a particularly verifiable history. This piece was imported by a furniture store in the 1950s and subsequently stood in the window of a vintage furniture store near Beesd until the 1980s. That alone makes it an object with character, but the statue itself is clearly much older and is estimated to date from the Qing period.
What makes this statue extra special is that remnants of old gilding are still visible under microscopic examination. In combination with the original polychromy, the fine craquelé in the surface, and the natural wear, this confirms the authentic structure of the statue. The aging looks convincing and gives the piece exactly that quiet, weathered appearance you look for in real old temple statues.
The gentle posture with folded hands, the old painting, and the weathered lotus base make this a decorative and spiritual object with a real presence.
