A monumental figure of Phra Ram (Rama), hero of the Thai Ramakien, shown as an archer in an animated theatrical stance with one leg raised and the body set in pronounced movement.

The figure wears a tall chada crown, large ear ornaments and an elaborately worked royal costume. The surface is densely articulated with floral and geometric ornament, beaded borders and raised decorative details continuing around the figure. The exposed areas of the face, arms and legs are comparatively smooth, providing a marked contrast with the richly worked costume.

Iconography

Phra Ram is the Thai interpretation of Rama, associated with duty, courage, justice and royal authority. The crown, bow and stylised pose relate closely to the visual language of traditional Thai Khon performance, in which episodes from the Ramakien have long been represented.

Surface and condition

The bronze has a deep dark patina with localised green copper oxidation and reddish-brown metallic tones visible within recessed areas. These surface characteristics are consistent with natural ageing but are not, in themselves, used as evidence for an earlier date.

The long attenuated limbs, carefully modelled hands and extensive three-dimensional ornament distinguish the sculpture from smaller, more simply finished commercial Rama figures. Its scale and fully worked reverse indicate that it was conceived as a freestanding decorative sculpture.

Dating

On the basis of style, casting, surface treatment and patination, the figure is dated to the second half of the 20th century, probably circa 1960–1985.

Condition

In good overall condition, with age-related surface wear and oxidation consistent with the photographs.
