A pair of Indian bronze or copper-alloy covered vessels, each of generously rounded form raised on a waisted spreading foot, surmounted by a domed cover with a lotus bud-form finial. The surfaces display a deep, variegated dark-brown to near-black patina, enlivened by areas of warmer metallic colour, oxidation and wear.

Closely related in design yet subtly differing in profile and surface, the vessels retain the individual character associated with hand manufacture. Their restrained silhouettes and richly aged surfaces lend the pair a sculptural presence particularly suited to Wabi-Sabi, Japandi and contemporary interiors.

Provenance and Date

Probably India, first half to mid-20th century, circa 1920–1960. The form and construction are consistent with traditional Indian decorative and ceremonial metalwork. Their original purpose is not securely established; vessels of this type may have served a decorative, storage, ceremonial or offering function.

Material and Technique

Bronze or related copper alloy, hand-fashioned and finished. The domed covers are fitted with lotus bud-form finials. The exteriors bear a naturally uneven patina with rubbed matte and polished passages, while the interiors retain visible oxidation and working marks. The felt coverings to the undersides are later additions intended to protect display surfaces.

Condition

In good vintage condition, consistent with age and use. Both vessels show uneven patination, oxidation, rubbing, scratches and minor surface irregularities. As expected of hand-made objects, the covers do not fit with complete mechanical precision. Later felt has been applied to the undersides. These characteristics form an integral part of the objects’ aged appearance. Please refer to the photographs for a full visual record of condition.

Style and Display

Quietly monumental in character, the pair may be displayed together or separately on a console, low table or plinth. Their dark surfaces and balanced profiles complement natural stone, timber, linen and other understated materials.
