This technical note records the non-invasive examination of a large Shakyamuni Buddha associated with the Tibetan-Himalayan tradition. Rather than treating age as a single visual impression, it considers how casting, finishing, wear, internal deposits and ultraviolet response relate to one another.

The figure was studied visually, with digital microscopy at up to approximately 50× magnification, and under 365 nm ultraviolet illumination. The record concentrates on tool marks, chased decoration, casting joins, interior accretions, corrosion colours and local fluorescence.
These methods are observational and non-destructive. They do not, on their own, identify an alloy, mineral phase, organic residue or fluorescent compound. The discussion below therefore separates what is visible from what may reasonably be inferred, and avoids treating microscopy or UV response as absolute proof of date or authenticity.
The floral borders and linear details of the robe vary subtly in width, direction and depth. Their irregular rhythm is consistent with individual chasing after casting. Across smoother passages, dense networks of parallel and intersecting scratches indicate repeated mechanical contact, cleaning or polishing. Microscopy cannot establish where that activity occurred or assign it to a particular ritual or historical setting.


The Buddha and lotus pedestal were produced as separate cast elements and joined. At selected transitions, the metal is uneven and carries small raised areas, pits and finishing marks. Wear and deposits continue into adjacent passages, allowing the junctions to be assessed as part of the object rather than in isolation.


The observed construction is compatible with a traditional multi-part casting process followed by manual finishing. It is meaningful evidence of manufacture, but it does not independently provide a calendar date.
The open base exposes pale, green-blue and reddish-brown material within the hollow interior. Some areas are porous; others form layered skins crossed by fine cracks. The colours are compatible with corrosion products associated with a copper alloy, although specific identification as malachite, cuprite or another mineral would require analytical confirmation.




The protected location and morphology of some material are consistent with residual casting-core matter accompanied by developed corrosion. This supports hollow lost-wax manufacture as a working interpretation. It does not allow the growth rate or absolute age of the deposits to be calculated from photographs alone.
Under 365 nm illumination, several small residues fluoresce red to orange-red, while another confined area appears greenish. The reactions demonstrate optical differences between local materials and their surroundings, but fluorescence colour is not a chemical fingerprint by itself.



Possible sources include wax, adhesive, conservation material, an organic binder or a substance applied during use. A ritual material is one hypothesis among several; sindoor, for example, cannot be confirmed without sampling and spectroscopic or chemical analysis.
The elongated earlobes, tall ushnisha, patterned curls and meditative posture identify the historical Buddha Shakyamuni. His raised right hand forms the Abhaya Mudra, a gesture of reassurance, protection and fearlessness, while the left rests open in the lap.
According to the family history supplied with the object, the sculpture remained in Dutch private ownership for at least approximately forty years. This is relevant provenance information, but independent archival documentation has not been presented on this page.
Taken together, the multi-part casting, individual chasing, layered surface wear, protected interior corrosion and possible casting-core remnants form a coherent record of a traditionally manufactured metal sculpture with a substantial history of use. Considered alongside its iconography and stylistic character, these observations support the proposed Tibetan-Himalayan attribution and 17th–18th-century dating.
This examination provides supporting documentation rather than a conclusive scientific certificate. Further work could include XRF alloy analysis, Raman or FTIR examination of fluorescent residues, and comparison with securely dated reference sculptures.
In good condition consistent with age, with surface wear, oxidation, casting irregularities, minor scratches and dark patination in recessed areas. The research images are highly magnified and make small features appear substantially more prominent than they are to the unaided eye.
