Carved in wood, lacquered and gilded, this seated Buddha comes from Myanmar and dates to around 1880–1940. It is a fine example of the Mandalay style, and the front of its stepped base bears a Burmese inscription in flowing, rounded script, a personal touch that gives the piece real presence.
The Buddha is shown in bhumisparsha mudra, reaching down to the base with his right hand to call the earth to witness while the left rests in his lap. His right shoulder is bare, and an elegant sash with floral borders sweeps over the left. Armlets and a chest ornament complete his attire, and fine snail-shell curls cover the ushnisha. Lotus motifs decorate the tiers of the stepped base.
Time has softened the gilding into a warm, characterful surface, with dark lacquer showing through on the highest points and lending the figure depth. A large central opening at the top of the ushnisha marks where the flame finial (ketumala) was originally fixed. At 35.5 cm tall and 1.7 kg, it suits a home altar, windowsill or bookshelf.
