Standing Mandalay Buddha in Gilded Wood with Glass Inlay – Thai Export Tag, 85 cm

Standing 85 cm tall, this Mandalay Buddha is carved in wood, fully gilded over black lacquer and richly set with mirror and coloured glass. Inlaid eyes give the face a bright, lifelike gaze. The statue still carries its old Thai export tag from the Department of Fine Arts, complete with a handwritten permit number, a charming piece of its journey.

The Buddha stands upright on a lotus cushion with both arms lowered, one hand holding the edge of his robe, which flares gracefully at the hem. Raised gilded scrollwork studded with mirror glass and blue and red glass runs along the hems, chest and sleeves and across the band at the brow. Snail-shell curls cover the head beneath a small rounded ushnisha, and the Buddha rests on a black wooden plinth.

The gilding is warm and well preserved, with touches of black lacquer showing through on the legs, back and edges that add depth and character. At 85 cm and 4.8 kg, it makes a striking yet manageable centrepiece for a hallway, living room or meditation space.
