At 101 cm tall, this standing Buddha is hand-carved from pale wood with a whitewashed, limed finish and dressed in hand-braided cord. A shoulder cape, necklace, waist sash, hanging strands and a band around the base were all braided by hand and fixed to the statue, making it a striking decorative piece from Indonesia, dating from the second half of the 20th century.
In his right hand the Buddha holds a lotus offering before the chest, while his left forearm rests across the body, palm turned upward. A braided cap with a small loop crowns the serene face with its lowered eyes and long earlobes. The cord twists into curls, plaits and fringes that play beautifully against the light wood, and the statue rises from a round lotus base.
Brown staining and patina on the robe and arms, small chips in the finish and a few loose cord strands at the shoulders tell the story of the piece and give it a warm, lived-in charm. Tall at 101 cm yet light at just 4.8 kg, it makes an atmospheric centrepiece for a hallway, living room, garden room or meditation space.
