Large Monumental Wooden Buddha Statue on Elephant Throne (Gajasana) – Shan Style – 95.5 cm / 32 kg

Specifications: H 95.5 × W 61 cm | Weight: 32.00 kg | Solid Hardwood | UV-Verified Shell Inlay | Historic Temple Restoration

We proudly present a monumental, extraordinarily heavy, and weathered masterpiece for high-end interiors or collections: a large hand-carved wooden Buddha statue in the Burmese Shan style, seated on a rare Elephant Throne (Gajasana). With an impressive height of 95.5 cm and a massive weight of no less than 32 kilos, this sculpture represents a powerful and unique historical object from the 20th century.

The Unsalted Material Truth & Construction

At 1stBuddha, we do not believe in sales pitches; we let the material and biology do the talking. This object has been thoroughly forensically examined on the workbench and reveals a fascinating, layered history of active devotion:

  • UV-Verified Eyes of Natural Shell: Forensic ultraviolet (UV) examination confirms the organic authenticity of the serene face. The almond-shaped eye plates are hand-carved from natural seashell (mother-of-pearl) and glow intensely electric blue under the UV lamp, beautifully embedded in the original jet-black thit-si tree resin snail. This gives the Buddha a hypnotic, 'awake' look.
  • Heavy Solid Base: The core of the throne and the Buddha consists of a solid, extraordinarily dense and heavy Asian hardwood trunk (ironwood/teak root). The underside shows the authentic, rough traces of manual hollowing with a gouge to regulate the internal stresses of the wood. This explains the brute mass of 32 kg on the scale.
  • Historic Monastery Restoration: This object has been used intensively in active temple practice for decades. The hardwood frame has shifted over time, which explains the large, characteristic drying and shrinkage cracks on the sides and on the lap. These fractures were structurally stabilized and restored in Asia long ago with an opaque gold lacquer and primer layer. This layered overpainting has made the details of the thayo lacquer relief 'fleshier' here and there, testifying to a pure, authentic history of use.
  • Elephant Iconography: The monumental throne base is supported by three stylized elephants sticking their heads forward. Within Eastern iconography, the elephant symbolizes unwavering spiritual steadfastness, stability, and absolute wisdom.
