A 19th-Century Burmese Temple Disciple in Prayer
We proudly present this exceptional devotional artwork: a 19th-century Burmese monk figure from the renowned Konbaung dynasty. This statue, which presumably represents one of the Buddha's foremost disciples, embodies the essence of the Ava or Shan style. The object is a tangible remnant of Myanmar's rich spiritual history.
Style & Meaning
The disciple is depicted in a kneeling devotional posture, hands clasped in the Anjali Mudra in front of the chest. This posture represents absolute humility and spiritual devotion. The monk rests on a classically stylized lotus throne base, an iconographic detail that emphasizes the spiritual sublimity of the subject.
Material & Patina
The sculpture is masterfully carved from a single solid block of antique teak (Tectona grandis). The finish is executed using the refined white-see method: a complex build-up of authentic black lacquer topped with original, hand-applied gold leaf. The condition is sublime and completely unrestored. The natural 'soft wear' on the friction points subtly reveals the black lacquerwork beneath the gold leaf, bearing witness to a centuries-old history. On the underside, the original manual chisel marks and the bone-dry, weathered teak wood are visible – irrefutable proof of authenticity.
