This authentic, monolithic Burmese Buddha statue from the 19th century (late Konbaung Dynasty) is a beautiful example of the classic Mandalay style. Hand-carved from a single block of tropical hardwood, the statue depicts the Buddha in a standing iconography, holding a centrally placed, deep-black lacquered alms bowl (Patra) with both hands. Despite its age and the natural presence of some historical cracks in the wood, the statue retains a graceful and impressive appearance.
Historical Finish & Patina
The statue's surface displays the authentic 19th-century layers in their full glory:
- Gilding: The hand-applied 24-carat gold leaf has worn away in high-contact areas, revealing the deep, mineral cinnabar-red primer and the black Thit-si lacquer layer underneath.
- Glass Inlays: The 'Pata' forehead band and the ornate borders of the 'civara' robe are richly embellished with hand-cut mirror glass tesserae (Hmankazi), skillfully embedded in Thayo lacquer relief.
