Bamana Horse-Like Animal Mask from Mali – Carved Wood

Bamana zoomorphic wood mask from Mali

Bold equine profile

The carving is built around a long projecting muzzle, upright ears and sharply framed geometric eyes. A small central crest adds another vertical accent. Together these features create an unmistakably horse-like impression, while the sculptor has deliberately reduced the animal to angular planes rather than attempting a naturalistic portrait.

Bamana attribution

This mask is attributed to the Bamana of Mali, whose sculptural traditions include highly abstracted animal imagery in several masking contexts. No secure traditional name accompanies this particular object. The catalogue therefore avoids assigning an undocumented ritual identity and describes what can be supported visually: a Bamana zoomorphic mask with equine characteristics.

Surface and condition

Age and handling have produced a richly weathered wooden surface with abrasion, erosion, tonal variation and surviving traces of a darker finish. The hollowed reverse retains openings associated with attachment or wearing. These marks are integral to the object's history and are shown throughout the photographic record.

Each object is examined before it is offered: material, casting or carving technique, surface, and signs of age are compared with documented references. You will receive a certificate of authenticity and an official invoice detailing the period, material, and available provenance.
