The object was crafted during the heyday of European Japonism, a period in which Japanese art and culture exerted a tremendous influence on the French elite and art world.
The depiction shows an atmospheric Japanese river landscape with elegant figures in traditional clothing, boats on the water, and the iconic Mount Fuji on the horizon.
