Antique Nepalese Shamanic Yak Leather Ritual Mask – Gurung / Magar Tribe

This authentic, shamanic ritual mask from the early to mid-20th century (approx. 1920–1950) originates from the mountainous border regions of Nepal and is attributed to the Gurung or Magar tribes. The mask represents an extremely rare ethnographic object, handcrafted according to ancient tribal methods where thick, untanned yak leather was wet-molded over a rudimentary wooden form. This pre-industrial process results in a well-worn texture with organic, asymmetrical undulations inherent to the shrinkage of raw animal hide.

The object is in a completely untouched, verified collector's condition. Free from modern preservatives, this mask reflects the raw, sacred aesthetic of the Himalayan region.

• Smoke and Tar Patina: The deep, dull charcoal-black surface skin is the direct result of decades of exposure to wood smoke and rising tar fumes within traditional Himalayan households. This deeply infiltrated smoke patina naturally preserved the leather and emits characteristic, authentic olfactory indicators.
• Organic Anchoring: The tufts of original black yak hair are traditionally anchored directly into the edge zones of the hardened leather. The hair sections follow the natural anatomical contours of the trained shamanistic structure.
• Constructive Purity: Forensic analysis confirms the absence of industrial textile reinforcements, synthetic binders, or modern adhesives along the inside and edges. The reverse side shows the pure, raw flesh side of the dried hide with historical signs of use and operational wear.
