Spiritual Unity: Antique Pair of Thai Buddhas
This rare pair of bronze Buddha statues is a beautiful example of the Rattanakosin style from the early 20th century (c. 1900). Both statues are depicted in the Bhumisparsha mudra, the posture in which the Buddha calls upon the earth as a witness to his enlightenment. The fact that these statues have been preserved as a pair suggests that they originally stood side by side on a private altar.
Technical Audit by 1stbuddha
At 1stbuddha.nl, we look beyond the surface. This pair has been subjected to a material inspection:
- Original Casting Core: The underside of both statues still contains the authentic casting core of red clay and sand, a crucial feature for dating and provenance.
- Natural Patina: The bronze displays a deep, dark patina with traces of ritual use and natural oxidation.
- Handmade: Small variations in weight and detail confirm that each statue was individually cast using the lost-wax method.
