Rare 19th-Century South Indian Temple Panel – Ganesha
This impressive, hand-carved panel depicts the Hindu deity Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. This object originates from a temple complex in South India (likely Tamil Nadu) and dates from the early 19th century. It is a rare example of surviving polychrome temple art.
Authentic Pigments & Craftsmanship
The panel is carved from a single block of solid hardwood. The original mineral pigments (deep red, ochre, and green) have been beautifully preserved, giving the object a museum-quality appearance. The top is crowned by a Kirtimukha, a mythological creature that offers protection to the sacred space.
Audit & Condition
This piece has been audited for authenticity by 1stBuddha. The natural craquelé, the deep oxidation on the reverse side, and the absence of synthetic dyes confirm an age of approx. 200 years. An honest and unrestored masterpiece for the serious collector.
