Antique Thai Rattanakosin Buddha Statue
This heavy bronze Buddha statue depicts the Buddha seated in Vajrasana on a richly detailed double lotus base. The right hand touches the earth in the Bhumisparsha mudra, one of the most powerful postures within the Buddhist statue tradition.
This earth-touching posture refers to the moment of enlightenment, in which the Buddha remains steadfast and calls upon the earth as a witness. The meaning of this image lies in grounding, protection, inner strength, spiritual clarity, and overcoming doubt.
The statue has the elegant, slender proportions characteristic of the Thai Rattanakosin style, with long fingers, a refined body shape, and a tall, flame-shaped ushnisha. The antique gilding, red underlayer, dark bronze color, and natural wear give the object a deep, ritual appearance.
The open underside shows old core remnants of clay and sand, consistent with traditional bronze casting techniques. Together with the heavy weight, the thick casting wall, and the weathered surface, this supports a dating in the 19th or early 20th century.
