This antique 19th-century Thai bronze Buddha statue embodies the pure, flowing elegance of the classic Sukhothai style, crafted during the Rattanakosin period. Standing at 47.5 cm tall and 31.0 cm wide, this sculpture possesses a monumental and serene presence. The statue is masterfully cast with exceptionally thick, historic bronze walls, which is directly reflected in its impressive, heavy weight of no less than 12.6 kg. The Buddha is seated in the iconic Bhumisparsha mudra on a stylized double row of lotus leaves (Padmasana).
This masterpiece was selected purely for its aesthetic perfection, casting quality, and massive density. A flawless art investment for the purist collector or as a calming centerpiece in a high-end Zen interior.
Spiritual Significance & Iconography
The Bhumisparsha mudra (the gesture of the earth as witness) symbolizes the moment of enlightenment, wherein the Buddha touches the earth with the fingertips of his right hand to call upon it as a witness to his steadfastness against the temptations of the demon king Mara. This sculpture displays the ultimate characteristics of the Sukhothai art renaissance: a beautifully elongated, oval face with a refined aquiline nose profile, downcast eyes in deep meditation, and a prominent, flaming Ketumala (flame finial) on the ushnisha reflecting transcendent spiritual energy. Over the left shoulder falls the traditional Sanghati (monk's robe), which forms a characteristic, bifurcated pleat just above the navel.
Forensic Material Analysis & Patina
- Authentic Casting Core: The hollow interior of the base preserves the thick, untouched, and partially fossilized remains of the original pre-industrial casting core, consisting of a traditional matrix of clay, river sand, and organic ash (cire perdue or lost wax method).
- Pristine Bronze Layer: The statue possesses a magnificent, naturally aged deep olive-green and charcoal-brown bronze skin. High-friction zones such as the knees and chest show a mild, organic sheen that is a direct result of decades of historical devotional touches. The skin is completely free of modern chemical acid washes or artificial green coatings.
- Historical Provenance Markers: Along the bottom edge are old, vintage felt protective pads, carefully applied at the time by an earlier European connoisseur to protect valuable furniture from the heavy, brutal bronze edge of 12.6 kg.
