Royal Burmese Buddha – Masterpiece of Thayo & Mirror Mosaic from Mandalay (c. 1900)

This remarkable Royal Burmese Buddha represents one of the finest expressions of Mandalay craftsmanship from the late nineteenth to early twentieth century. Entirely hand-carved from solid teak wood, the sculpture is lavishly decorated with traditional thit-si lacquer, raised thayo relief, original gold leaf and thousands of individually placed mirror and glass inlays. Such elaborate work required exceptional skill and was reserved for important religious commissions destined for temples and monasteries.

The Buddha is depicted in the Bhumisparsha Mudra, the Earth-Touching Gesture. This sacred moment recalls Siddhartha Gautama calling the earth to witness his enlightenment beneath the Bodhi tree. Within Theravāda Buddhism, this iconography symbolises spiritual victory, unwavering determination and ultimate awakening.

A Royal Tradition of Burmese Temple Art

Unlike ordinary devotional figures, this Buddha was created using a highly sophisticated decorative process. Raised thayo patterns were carefully modelled by hand before thousands of tiny mirror and coloured glass fragments were individually embedded into the surface. The sculpture was then finished with layers of traditional lacquer and gold leaf, creating an extraordinary play of light that would originally have illuminated temple interiors during ceremonies.

Works of this quality were produced by specialised workshops in Mandalay, the artistic and religious centre of the last Burmese kingdom. Their combination of sculpture, lacquer art and mirror mosaic remains one of the most distinctive achievements of Southeast Asian sacred art.

Original Gilding and Historic Surface

The sculpture preserves an exceptional historic surface. Areas of original gilding remain throughout the figure, while naturally worn highlights reveal the passage of time and generations of devotional use. Fine age craquelure within the lacquer and small losses to the mirror mosaic further enhance its authenticity rather than detract from it.

The subtle contrast between surviving gold, deep black lacquer and coloured mirror inlays creates a richness rarely encountered in surviving Burmese wooden sculptures.

Masterful Handcraftsmanship

Every decorative border, floral motif and mirror element was executed entirely by hand. The refined shoulder ornaments, elegant robe decoration and harmonious facial expression demonstrate the remarkable level of craftsmanship achieved by Mandalay artisans during Burma's final royal period.

Very good antique condition with age-appropriate wear. The sculpture displays natural ageing, original lacquer surfaces, surviving gold leaf, minor losses to the mirror mosaic and a beautiful historic patina consistent with its age and religious use.
