Antique Bronze Crowned Buddha – Thailand or Laos, 19th Century
This impressive antique bronze Buddha statue radiates tranquility, dignity, and spiritual power. The Buddha is depicted as an exalted spiritual ruler, recognizable by the richly detailed crown, graceful breast ornaments, and refined bracelets. Within the Southeast Asian Buddhist art tradition, this type of representation is often associated with the Buddha as a universal ruler and enlightened protector.
The statue is executed in an elegant meditative posture on a double lotus base. The right hand touches the earth in the classic Bhumisparsha Mudra, the gesture with which the Buddha invokes the earth as a witness to his enlightenment. As a result, the sculpture symbolizes inner strength, steadfastness, and spiritual awakening. The underside shows remnants of old casting cores consistent with traditional lost-wax casting (cire perdue). The dark bronze possesses a natural patina formed over time, with subtle traces of oxidation that give the object extra character. The combination of weight, construction, patina, and finish points to an authentic older statue from Thailand or Laos, presumably dating from the 19th century.
Thanks to its powerful presence, this statue makes for a special collector's item, but also an impressive interior piece for a meditation room, reception area, library, or Asian-inspired interior.
