Antique Burmese Mandalay Buddha Statue
This antique Mandalay Buddha statue from Burma / Myanmar has exactly the look that makes this style so beloved: a soft, meditative gaze, warm old gilding, and a rich temple appearance without feeling hard or new. It is an image that immediately brings peace to a room. The Buddha sits in Bhumisparsha mudra, the earth-touching posture. This mudra refers to the moment when the Buddha attains enlightenment and calls upon the earth as a witness. The meaning is powerful and timeless: grounding, inner certainty, protection, and overcoming doubt. What makes this image special is the combination of size, weight, and presence. At 51 cm high and 8.4 kg, it does not feel like a small decorative statue, but like a true altar object. The gilded skin, red lacquer underlayer, and small mirrored glass details give the statue that typical Burmese temple warmth: gold that does not scream, but lives.
The underside shows old wood, traditional construction, and an old collection number. This gives the statue extra character and points to an older collecting history. The separate hand is present and is included; This is part of the weathered state of the object and does not detract from its strong presence.
