This is an authentic Dento Kokeshi from the traditional Togatta lineage, crafted by the renowned master artisan Shoichi Kanno (1935–present). Shoichi Kanno, who learned his craft under the esteemed Kichisuke Agatsuma, is known for his refined interpretation of this classic Tohoku style. The piece dates from the mid to late Showa period (1970s/1980s).
The Kokeshi is notable for its iconic red 'Tehen' halo motif on the head, which is very characteristic of the Togatta school. The body is slender and cylindrical, hand-turned from indigenous Japanese wood and richly decorated with layered red chrysanthemums (Kiku). On the underside, there is the deeply carved, authentic signature of the master.
The object is in excellent vintage condition. Over the years, the wood has developed a natural, warm patina that adds to the character of the piece. The painting is in stable condition, with the typical, mild aging of the pigments underscoring the authenticity of this vintage Kokeshi.
