Monumental Antique Teak Mandalay Buddha Statue – Inlaid Shell Eyes – Burma – 19th Century – 193 cm
Specifications: 193 cm high | 86 cm wide | Solid Teak (Life-size Temple and Palace Size) An absolute, breathtaking, and museum-worthy discovery from the Asian art trade: a monumental, life-size antique hand-carved teak statue of a standing Mandalay Buddha from the 19th century (Burma / Myanmar). With an impressive and rare height of no less 193 cm and a width of 86 cm, this sculpture represents a heavy, royal temple commission of the very highest category.
Royal Appearance & Spiritual Presence
This life-size masterpiece depicts the Buddha standing on a stylized lotus throne, gracefully and fluidly holding up his royal robe (uttarasanga) at the sides with both hands. This model brings an unwavering, majestic atmosphere of absolute tranquility, wisdom, and spiritual grounding to high-end interiors, entrances, or exclusive reception rooms:
- The Shield of Tranquility: The serene, meditative gaze of the face radiates a direct, deep focus. This life-sized object serves as the absolute centerpiece of the room and creates a serene atmosphere that immediately impresses every visitor.
- Traditional Thayo Lacquer Relief: The wide Mandalay headband and the complete, wavy edges of the robe are heavily decorated with hand-sculpted thayo lacquer paste. These bands are hand-inlaid with red and green glass beads and small mirrors (hman-zi shwe-cha) that refract the light in a mystical way.
- Verified Inlay Eyes (The Blue Test): Forensic ultraviolet (UV) examination proves the pure organic age of the face. The almond-shaped eye plates are hand-carved from natural seashell (mother-of-pearl) and glow intensely electric blue under the UV lamp. The pupils are inlaid with the original jet-black and matte thit-si tree resin snail. The deep shrinkage cracks surrounding the eye socket contain centuries-old, petrified temple soot.
- Fair Age Shrinkage of the Wood: The front shows a beautiful, legitimate, and deep vertical shrinkage crack across the right rib cage. This is the ultimate proof of solid, antique teak wood that has worked naturally over the decades in the dry temple environment and has lost all its moisture. Unrestored Back: The back shows the pure, untouched structure of the Burmese lacquer craft. The mantel is finished with a solid, matte black surface of the original tree resin lacquer, with the manual adze and carving marks of the master woodcarver still visible.
Forensic Analysis & Material Biology
Both the surface and the construction provide irrefutable, natural scientific proof of pure 19th-century age, completely free of modern export junk:
