The Whispering Master – Museum Bronze Mahasiddha (19th Century)

A rare devotional object from Tibet or Mongolia, dating from the early 19th century.

Rare Iconography

This solid cast bronze figure represents a Mahasiddha or respected Lama, seated in the lotus position. The unique position of the hands at the mouth is a rare iconographic representation of mantra recitation or deep breath control (pranayama). The human features and the compact form suggest that this was a very personal object for a private gau or travel altar.

Authenticity and Patina

Examination under UV light confirms the presence of original fire gilding in the folds of the robe. The bronze displays an honest, untouched age with green mineralization and natural corrosion patterns. The underside shows the rough casting cavity characteristic of authentic 19th-century Himalayan sculptures.
