A finely proportioned gilt-bronze figure of Buddha, Thailand, Ayutthaya period, 17th to early 18th century. The composed facial expression, disciplined rows of hair curls and tall flame-shaped ushnisha display characteristics associated with the later U-Thong C idiom.

Seated in virasana on a restrained moulded base, the right hand extends in bhumisparsha mudra, calling the earth to witness, while the left rests palm-up in the lap.

The copper-rich bronze retains layered gilded surfaces over a brown, crackled lacquer-like ground. Dark patination, local green copper products and ochre-toned deposits lend the surface notable depth. Close-up photographs record the surviving surface layers around the hair curls.

The underside preserves a substantial portion of the historic casting core. Old cracking, losses and encrusted deposits are visible around the torso and lap and form part of the object’s history. Condition is fully illustrated.
