Large East Asian Guanyin on Dragon Fish – Bronze Temple Statue

Estimated value: €1,250 – €2,500. An impressive East Asian Guanyin statue from the first half of the 20th century, executed in bronze with a dark patina, old wear, and remnants of gilding.

Guanyin is revered in East Asia as a bodhisattva of compassion, protection, and mercy. The standing figure has a calm, dignified appearance and stands on a powerfully designed mythical dragonfish, surrounded by undulating water motifs.

The dark bronze patina, visible wear, remnants of gilding, and hand-worked details give the object a great deal of character. Especially the dragonfish base with its scaled body, open mouth, and undulating forms makes this sculpture particularly expressive.

Stylistically, the sculpture aligns with older 19th-century examples, but without additional provenance documentation, a tentative dating in the first half of the 20th century is maintained. Due to its size, weight, and powerful presence, this is a striking statement piece for an interior, altar, practice room, or collection of Asian art.
