This refined, vintage Japanese sculpture of the Buddhist Bodhisattva Kannon (Guanyin) is a beautiful example of traditional spiritual woodcarving. With a compact height of 14.2 cm and a weight of 100 grams, this object was skillfully handcrafted from a single solid block of indigenous Japanese Hinoki wood (cypress). Kannon is depicted in a seated, meditative posture on a rocky base, accompanied by a ritual water or offering vessel by her side.

The sculpture is in excellent, stable condition and reflects the pure, minimalist elegance of Japanese Buddhist art. An understated and powerful statement piece that seamlessly fits into a calming Japandi or minimalist interior.

Enku-style Gouge & Chisel Work

The stylistic design of the rocky base and the back is deeply influenced by the historic Japanese Enku style. This movement is characterized by powerful, geometric facet-chisel marks where the raw gouge and tool traces have been deliberately left visible. This gives the object an expressive, almost abstract dynamic. The contours of the rear veil and the flowing monk's robe (drapery) show a crystal-clear manual definition, beautifully finished with a non-synthetic, chestnut-brown organic pigment wash.
