MONUMENTAL BURMAN RELAXING BUDDHA — 160 CM Hand-Carved and Gilded Hardwood with Glass Inlay — Mid-20th Century
Bring a breathtaking piece of spiritual heritage into your home with this monumental Reclining Buddha. With an imposing length of 160 centimeters, this hand-carved masterpiece is of nearly life-size. The statue depicts the historical Buddha in the Parinirvana posture, the moment of transition to ultimate Nirvana. The serene facial features and the subtle smile radiate an unparalleled calm and peace.
CRAFTSMANSHIP AND DETAILS
This exceptionally large statue is crafted in the classic Burmese Mandalay style and hand-carved from a solid piece of hardwood. The robe features a beautifully decorated relief border inlaid with sparkling glass and mirror stones. The finish, with a traditional deep red lacquer base topped with gold leaf, creates a fascinating visual spectacle. Over the years, the gold on the raised parts has worn beautifully, allowing the warm red base to shine through.
CONDITION AND ORIGIN
Given its monumental size, the sculpture is in excellent vintage condition with an honest and weathered patina. There are a few light signs of age and drying cracks visible in the wood, which is typical of solid hardwood of this age and proves the authenticity of the piece. A museum-quality masterpiece for the serious collector.
