Monumental Bronze Wenshu Pusa Statue on Lion

This monumental bronze statue depicts Wenshu Pusa, known in Sanskrit as Manjushri, the bodhisattva of wisdom, insight, and clear thinking. He is depicted here seated on a powerful lion, a classic symbol for the power of wisdom that dispels confusion, doubt, and ignorance.

Within the Chinese Buddhist tradition, Wenshu Pusa is revered as a protective and clarifying presence. This image fits particularly well in a space where knowledge, study, meditation, leadership, or decision-making are central. Think of a library, office, entrance, practice room, meditative space, or a powerful spiritual interior.

The lion beneath Wenshu Pusa represents courage, protection, and the victorious power of insight. Together, they form a strong symbol for mental clarity, spiritual focus, and the ability to see through illusion and uncertainty. This makes the image not only impressive as an art object but also meaningful as a daily symbol of wisdom and inner direction.

The statue is made of heavy bronze and, due to its height of nearly one meter and a weight of approximately 60–80 kg, has an exceptionally strong presence. Stylistically, it aligns with Chinese Buddhist art from the Late Qing to the early Republic period. Its well-known Dutch gallery provenance, where the statue was already on display in an antique gallery in Bergen op Zoom in the 1970s, reinforces the historical character and collector's value of this object.
