Antique Javanese Bronze Statue – Vitarka Mudra – 58 cm – 8.5 kg
This impressive bronze statue of the Buddha Shakyamuni is a rare heavy casting (8.5 kg) of Javanese origin. It forms the perfect counterpart to the Bhumisparsha example, as this Buddha is depicted in the Vitarka Mudra. This gesture, in which the thumb and index finger touch, symbolizes the transmission of knowledge, discussion, and the intellectual argumentation of Buddhist teachings.
Javanese Craftsmanship and Architecture
The iconic architectural structure of the throne is directly inspired by the stepped temple structures (Candi) of Central Java. The broad, round double lotus throne supports the figure with robust serenity. The face, with its characteristic full lips and downward gaze, reflects the classic Javanese aesthetic as we know it from Borobudur.
Forensic Details
Weighing 8.5 kg, this is a solid object made of "high-gauge" bronze. The interior of the hollow base shows authentic traces of mineralization, casting residue, and a distinct patina stratigraphy, which confirms the dating around the turn of the century. The dark, warm patina on the exterior has built up naturally over the years through devotion and time.
