At 162.5 cm, this standing Burmese figure was made to command a room. The teak carving retains red-black lacquer, a pale painted face, gilded metal trim and coloured glass or mirror inlays along the robe. Those materials create the highly finished surface associated with 19th-century Mandalay devotional sculpture.
The lowered right hand forms Varada mudra; the left gathers the robe. The long ears, rounded ushnisha and richly bordered garment place the figure comfortably within the Mandalay visual tradition.
An official sealed export label dated 1988 remains attached. It should be read correctly: the label establishes a documented export event and proves the Buddha was already in the international art market by 1988; it does not itself date the carving.
The original round base survives; the black square display plinth is later. Age wear, lacquer loss and local losses to decorative fittings are visible and documented in the photographs.
Each object is examined before it is offered: material, casting or carving technique, surface, and signs of age are compared with documented references. You will receive a certificate of authenticity and an official invoice detailing the period, material, and available provenance.
