This monumental, vintage wooden sculpture of the Jina Buddha from the mid-to-late 20th century (circa 1960) is an impressive example of high-quality Indonesian carving. With a height of 60.5 cm and a width of 39.5 cm, this object possesses rare, floor-filling proportions. The statue is entirely handcrafted from a single solid block of high-density hardwood (monolithic heartwood), which is immediately palpable in its heavy weight of no less than 7.1 kg.
The Buddha displays a syncretic, indigenous Balinese-Javanese folk style and is depicted in the iconic Bhumisparsha mudra. This unique collector's item bridges classical Buddhist iconography with traditional Indonesian textile patterns and is in excellent, verified condition.
Indigenous Iconography & Textile Ornaments
The sculpture shows a fascinating fusion of religious traditions. The Buddha wears a richly decorated, crowned Mukuta headdress with gold leaf accents, typical of royal Balinese sculpture. The monk's robe (Sanghati) is meticulously hand-painted on the back in a deep, madder-red hue with traditional, flowing Batik Parang/Sawat scrollwork – a motif historically associated with royal dignity and spiritual power. Additionally, stylized, line-drawn Dharmachakra wheel statuses (the Wheel of Dharma) are applied to the left arm.
Material Verification & Construction Features
- Monolithic Hardwood: In contrast to 90% of Balinese woodcarving, which consists of small cabinet pieces under 30 cm, this object is a rare large-scale statement piece. It is hand-carved from a single, thick tree trunk (half tree trunk).
- Natural Heart Crack: Centrally on the front is a continuous, naturally stabilized shrinkage crack (heart crack) running vertically from the lap through the massive base. This is the visual proof of unglued, solid old wood that has naturally worked and lived over the decades.
- Underbase & Lacquer Layer: The flat underside of the base shows the original, rough chisel marks across the grain. The entire underside is completely sealed with an authentic, historical protective layer of organic, charcoal-black lacquer.
