Description
Characterful Thai sculpture of Phra Aphai Mani, the legendary prince and hero of the celebrated Thai epic of the same name. He is seated cross-legged while playing his characteristic magic flute. The figure wears an elaborate necklace, armlets, belt ornaments and a high tied hairstyle.
Finish and patina
The sculpture is cast in a heavy copper alloy or bronze and is largely covered with old gilt surface decoration. Natural wear and darker exposed areas accentuate the modelling and relief. The round base has a lightly hammered texture.
Condition
Good vintage condition with visible age- and use-related wear, local losses to the gilding and minor surface wear. The flute and hands are preserved.
