Large Thai Bronze Buddha in Dhyana Mudra – Sukhothai Style with Inlaid Eyes, 126 cm

At 126 cm high and 94 cm wide, this Thai bronze Buddha in Sukhothai style carries the commanding calm of a temple statue. Inlaid eyes, white with dark pupils, give the face a clear and lively gaze. Traces of gold on the curls, flame finial and ears, together with red lacquer in the hair, on the palms, the eyelids and the front panel of the base, reveal that the statue was once fully gilded.

The Buddha sits cross-legged with both hands resting open in his lap, the dhyana mudra of deep meditation. His robe drapes over the left shoulder, its long flap falling to the navel. Tight snail-shell curls rise to a tall flame (rasmi) above the ushnisha, a hallmark of the Sukhothai style, while long earlobes and a gentle smile complete the face. He rests on a double lotus cushion above a stepped base on feet, its front adorned with a panel of beaded borders and a floral motif.

The bronze has a warm golden-brown patina with lively colour play: orange and violet tones across the back and face, and flecks of the old gold leaf in the hair. Small old fills at the arm joints tell of a long life and add to the character of this Buddha.
